Fall 2023
Cans are a staple of everyday life, roughly everyone drinks one can a day... While cans themselves are very a very reusable material, how can they be made into something new. I chose cans because they are in my everyday, when looking into how to create a material I didn’t know where to start. So I cut the can into three different pieces. And it all started there...
Start with a can (1). Cut the can into three pieces. Discarding the top and the bottom (2). Hammer the cut can into flat sheet. This process gives the tile it’s texture. Mark the can with tile size. (3) Cut the can into tile shape. Make a small slit for metal fastener to be attached. Then hammer fastener flat. (4) Then Spray paint the tiles matte black (5). Cut a small slit for Zip tie attachment to the matte black PVC pipe support. (6)

After creating a recycled material, I was tasked with integrate this material in order to revitalize a pre-existing space. This space is Remedy Coffee located in Knoxville’s historic old city. When completing a site visit, I observed no private places to sit. This material was the key for providing more secluded areas.
