Subtractive Space

Spring 2023

This project explores the dynamic relationship between light, shadow, and form through a subtractive design process. Beginning with expressive charcoal sketches, I investigated the atmospheric and spatial qualities that emerge from the interplay of light and void. These abstract drawings served as the foundation for conceptual thinking, guiding the development of layered models that were shaped by removing material rather than adding it.

Through iterative modeling and laser-cut layering techniques, I crafted a final form that carves space as much as it defines it. Strategic voids allow light to filter in and activate the structure from within, transforming static material into an experience of movement and contrast. Whether illuminated in darkness or observed in natural light, the model reveals a choreography of spatial compression and expansion.
